Today, we dive into the heart of classic Korean poetry, specifically a form called Sijo (pronounced Shee-Jō). Sijo is a three-line, tightly structured poetic form that was immensely popular during the Joseon Dynasty. It’s concise, evocative, and often deeply personal.

The poem we’re exploring is one of the most famous expressions of love and longing in Korean literature: "A Willow Branch I Choose to Break" by the Gisaeng (female artist) Hongrang from the 16th century.

Hongrang wrote this poem for her beloved, the scholar Go Gyeong-jung, as they were separated by long distance. Imagine the pain of a farewell, knowing you might not see the person you love for a very long time.

A mountain willow branch, I choose and break, And send it to my beloved. Please plant it outside the window where you sleep, and look after it. If new leaves sprout in the night rain, Please consider them to be me.

This short poem is powerful because of the symbolism. Hongrang doesn't just promise to visit; she sends a willow branch—a living part of nature—as her surrogate.
