The materials present around you are grouped widely into metals and non-metals.

Those materials which possess the characteristic of being hard, malleable, shiny, fusible, ductile etc. are called metal.For example: iron, gold, aluminium, copper etc.

Those materials which do not possess the characteristics of metals are known as non-metal. Few examples are- Sulphur, Carbon, Phosphorous and Oxygen.
