Monsoon birding in Darjeeling District, particularly around Rongtong, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, and Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, provides an enchanting experience as the rains transform the area into a vibrant, green haven for birdlife. Rongtong, located in the lower Himalayan foothills, offers a range of sightings, including exotic migrant species like the Violet and Emmarald Cuckoo, Indian Cuckoo apart from the fantastic locals. The misty, monsoon weather creates an ideal backdrop for observing these colorful birds in action.
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers, is especially rewarding for birders. Here, you can encounter numerous forest species, such as the Rufous-throated Partridge, Oriental Pied Hornbill, and the elusive Sultan Tit. The monsoon season amplifies the sanctuary’s natural beauty, making it a perfect time to spot these birds amidst dense, rain-soaked foliage.
Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, situated on the slopes near Darjeeling, adds another layer to the monsoon birding experience. Known for its rich biodiversity, it’s home to several montane and forest birds, including the Hill Partridge, Greater Parrotbill, Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush, Green-tailed Sunbird, Red-billed Leiothrix and many other birds. The monsoon rains bring an array of migratory and local birds closer to trails, creating a vibrant birdwatching atmosphere that is both challenging and rewarding amidst the lush Himalayan scenery.
