Notes on this piece from our arranger, Jordan Moore:
"This arrangement of the popular Paraguayan song Pájaro Chogüí was written as our performance contribution to the first ever Latin American Ocarina Festival, 'Ocarina Latam'. Our friend and festival co-organizer Nicolas Miranda asked me to write an arrangement of a song from the Andes, and when we met to discuss our options, this song immediately made me think of ocarinas. Many versions feature the Quena, a flute-like instrument that doesn’t sound too different from ocarina. In this arrangement, the soprano C ocarina takes on that role throughout the first verse. Meanwhile, the soprano G, alto C, and alto G ocarinas are double-tonguing away with a rhythmic pattern that would normally be played by the Charango, a guitar-like instrument. Due to story this song tells, I decided to use a short section in which the upper ocarinas improvise bird sounds as a transition to the second verse where the melody is passed around and the texture changes more freely. I strived to hold on to the original style of this music while also throwing in some original material, so I hope you enjoy our performance of Pájaro Chogüí!"
