Inspired Affection of the Mountains - Helvellyn

I've been in awe of Helvellyn ever since I started walking in the English Lake District from being a young child with my family in the 1960s. And climbing Helvellyn is certainly one of my favourite walks. In fact, in early March 2023, my wife and I climbed it once again. For me, this was my 13th time up this mountain.

This is what the famous Alfred Wainwright had to say about Helvellyn: "Legend and poetry, a lovely name and a lofty altitude combine to encompass Helvellyn in an aura of romance; and thousands of pilgrims, aided by its easy accessibility, are attracted to its summit every year... If it did not inspire affection, would its devotees return to it so often?" (A Pictorial Guide to the Eastern Fells, Book One: The Central Fells).

I have climbed this mountain from every direction, in snow, rain, dull but dry days, and even in blisteringly hot days, such as in July 2013, when I challenged our 'Spiritually adopted daughter' Beth to climb it in a sponsored walk to raise money for her journey to South Africa. That day, it was so hot, I suffered dehydration, and struggled to reach the summit. But we did reach the summit, and I thought then, that that might be my last time up there. However, it wasn't, as you will see. Our son, Matthew, has also climbed this mountain with me many times, from the age of 4-years-old upwards.

If you have never climbed this, can I challenge you to try it? Physically, mentally and spiritually, it does you good. And if you can't climb this mountain (or indeed any other) due to age or physical ailments, then I hope you truly enjoy this 8 minute video. It is written in the Hebrew Scriptures, in Psalm121 - A song of ascents:
'If I raise my eyes to the hills, from where will my help come? My help comes from Adonai, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip — your guardian is not asleep. No, the guardian of Isra’el never slumbers or sleeps. Adonai is your guardian; at your right hand Adonai provides you with shade — the sun can’t strike you during the day or even the moon at night. Adonai will guard you against all harm; He will guard your life. Adonai will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.'

This, I have found to be so true, as I have ascended this amazing part of God's creation.
