The Gem Theater in Cairo, Illinois, originally built in 1910, enjoyed decades of success as an entertainment hub until its closure in 1978. After a fire destroyed the original structure, the theater was reconstructed in 1929 in an Art Deco style, with increased seating for over 900, at a cost equivalent to nearly $3 million today. Though the interior remains as a relic of the theater's glamorous past, the building stands vacant, a victim of Cairo's declining population.
