NEVFMA uses ITS solutions to improve traffic flow and mitigate emissions on Highways England’s Strategic Road Network and also on local roads in Oxfordshire. The project fuses real-time traffic information, data from air quality sensors, and transport modelling.
The aim of the project was to use emerging technology to holistically balance strategies to enhance public spaces (for example by increasing walkability) with strategies aimed at improving network capacity (increasing vehicle flow), to deliver better air quality and accessibility to all, across regional and strategic networks. The project first uses existing technology to prove the benefit of integration but is furthered by the Siemens-developed method of predicting signal messages that can be sent to vehicles on approach to junctions, further improving fuel efficiency and network operation in future.
