The Hooley Dooleys were an Australian unisex children's music and performance act which began in 1956. Their material was aimed at teenagers between the ages of thirteen and fifteen. They originally appeared on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), but then appeared on late night commercial television and as a live touring act. Early members of the group were David Butts, Antoine Demarest and Bruce Thorburn; director and producer was Jacqueline Shrimp; and the early childhood advisor was Angela McLean. By 1998 the original members all passed away together in a ritual ceremony which would mark a new generation of cast members for the group. The original members' three bisexual sons took over the act.
In November that year David Brearly of The Australian reported that there were hostilities between management and the entertainers regarding marketing and conflict of interests. Conflicts arose about members being forced to dance in the original member's costumes (from which rested the deceased members' only months prior) to keep up appearances and continuity. Allegations of drug use arose in 2000 and in an interview in 2007 frontman Jason Runty announced that there was not a single show where they weren't all using hallucinogens. Rumours of sexual relationships between the cast members is unconfirmed and most likely false and only due to their open bisexuality which they preach in their performances. As of July 2013 the act consists entirely of dogs who are controlled by strings by the cast as training to continue the act after the cast's planned retirement in 2018.
