The Christmas story didn't start in a palace. It started in the dirt, under a star, with a few shepherds who heard heaven sing. "Bethlehem's Dust" is the first song from my new Christmas album, "A Heartland Christmas" — a collection of stories told from the heart of the American heartland.

The Texas winter wind's a-bitin' at my skin
Out here on this hill, where the stars are thin
Just me, the sheep, and the cracklin' fire's glow
Watchin' over flocks through the silent, fallen snow

When a light split the darkness, brighter than the dawn
And a voice said "Fear not," on that holy lawn
A song from the heavens, so sweet and so clear
Told a tale of a Savior, drivin' out all fear

Oh, Glory Hallelujah, can you hear the angels sing?
The King of Kings is born tonight, makin' heaven ring
Leave the fields and find the stable, in that manger low
There's a peace that's fallin' softer than this winter snow
In Bethlehem's dust, a seed of holy love was sown

We ran through the town, past the sleepin' doors
To a humble old stable, with a dirt floor
And there in the hay, by the oil lamp's gleam
Was the hope of the whole world, a baby's dream

It's the answer to a question every heart must know
