Born as an albino in Mali, Salif Keita was disowned by his father, kicked out of school and rejected by his local community.

Albinos in Africa are strongly rejected, discriminated against and, at times, their lives are endangered.

Although Salif was forbidden to play music, he started his music career at the age of 18. He left his village to join the singing group Rail Band and in 1982, he branched off to launch his solo career.

In 1991, his album Amen made it to Number 1 on the Billboard World Chart, where it remained for 31 weeks.

In 2012, his album Moffou received a Grammy nomination.

After living in Paris the Ivory Coast, London and New York, he made a triumphant return to Mali in 1997, where he fights the prejudice that Africans with albinism endure.

His Salif Keita Foundation raises awareness and money for free healthcare and education for albinos in Africa. He pledged all proceeds from his LA Difference album to his foundation.

Salif has acquired land in Bamako to build a school and a health clinic for albinos.

‘I am white, my blood is black and I love that the difference is beautiful. I would like us to agree in love, and that we understand love and peace.’
