Sino-Tibetan dialogue focus for Tibet Foundation Day, 2019

Tibet Foundation celebrates its 34th anniversary of successfully helping vulnerable Tibetan people in Tibet, India and Nepal

London, England – His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s former Envoy, Mr Kelsang Gyaltsen*, will be the Guest Speaker at Tibet Foundation Day, marking the Foundation’s 34th anniversary, on 23 November 2019 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Mr Kelsang Gyaltsen will speak on a very current topic, “Sino-Tibetan Dialogue: The Quest for Finding Common Ground”, followed by a Q&A session, moderated by Mr John Billington, a long-time friend of Tibet, who has visited Tibet many times.

Dr Nathan W. Hill, Reader and Convenor of the Tibetan Studies Group at SOAS, will host the event. Monks from the renowned Drepung Loseling Monastery in India will conduct Buddhist prayers and perform sacred music followed by a lively and colourful cultural performance by artistes from the Tibetan Community UK.

Mr Phuntsog Wangyal, the Chairman and Founding Trustee of the Tibet Foundation, will describe the Foundation’s innovative and impactful aid programmes in India, Nepal and Tibet, undertaken in 2018-19 to a value of £357,924. His report will include first-hand, moving accounts from beneficiaries.

The charity has just launched an ambitious “Give Elders Dignity” campaign, aiming to raise an extra £100,000 over the next 12 months to support the most vulnerable elders in rural Tibetan communities in India, Nepal and Tibet. Plans for the 35th Anniversary in 2020 include a visit to London by His Holiness Sakya Gongma Trichen, former Head of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism, and an exhibition of Tibetan culture.

*About Mr Kelsang Gyaltsen:
From 2002 to 2010, as one of two Envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama entrusted with conducting dialogue with the Chinese leadership, Mr Kelsang Gyaltsen engaged in nine rounds of formal discussions and one informal meeting. He retired from the task in 2012. After subsequently serving as the Special Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Europe, and as Acting Head of the Office of Tibet in Brussels, he retired in July 2016.
