Maintaining connection and community in later life.

In recent years there's been a growing recognition of the unique challenges faced by gay men as we enter our senior years. The aging process can be difficult and isolating for anyone but for gay men it can be compounded by a lack of family support discrimination, and a history of marginalization.
As youth fades, many gay men feel isolated and disconnected from the culture they once relied on. This is even more the case for senior gay men living in rural communities across the country, especially if they are not partnered.
Living alone in later senior years comes with some risk. Something gay men share in common with straight men is that we don't age as well alone as women. It's important that we have regular contact with others who will check on us and miss us if they don't hear from us.
Cities like Wilton Manors Florida and Palm Springs California are common retirement destinations for gay men who want to keep community central in later life. These cities have housing, healthcare and social services available to help seniors who are living alone or with a partner.
Ageing is something we have to start thinking about when we are in our forties and fifties. Before we're too old or our health is too poor to relocate to a more welcoming community. It's important to start planning ahead.
