Описание:

The Holt Fish Pass is an incredible feat of engineering which helps to open up 150 miles of the river Severn in England for Salmon, Twaite Shad and other migratory fish. In this video we take a look at how it was built and what challenges the engineers had to overcome to complete this project during one of the wettest periods ever recorded in UK history!

Show Notes: Fish Pass Engineering at Holt Weir

Introduction

Holt Weir
Topic: Engineering of the fish pass at Holt Weir
Purpose: To enable fish like salmon and twait shad to reach their natural spawning grounds

1. Challenges in Construction

Holt Weir fish pass was the most challenging among the four constructed on the river.
Difficult access due to steep valley sides required transportation by boat.
Equipment, including a 100-tonne crane, was transported on a floating pontoon.
Concrete was delivered in skips on barges and had to be poured immediately upon arrival.

2. Design and Functionality

The fish pass features a vertical slot design with eight chambers.
Each chamber slows down water flow, allowing fish to rest before moving to the next chamber.
Fish exit at the upstream end, gaining access to the river above the weir.

3. Construction Timing

Construction coincided with the wettest day on record in the UK (3rd October 2020), causing delays.

4. Innovative Design Elements

Chambers slow river flow, with channels on the sides for faster water passage.
Positioned at the upstream end of the weir where the main flow attracts fish.

5. Comparison with Other Fish Passes

Similar design to Diglis Fish Pass but with different outer wall construction.
Lego-style interlocking bricks used due to poor access and shallow bedrock.

6. Importance of Fish Pass Positioning

Located at the upstream end of the weir where most flow occurs.
Ensures fish are drawn to the fish pass entrance.

Conclusion

The project aims to open up 150 miles of river for migratory fish.
