The Melancholic Personality Type - The Four Temperaments / Humors - Explained

The melancholic type is one of the temperaments of the four temperament theory. The four-temperament theory is perhaps the most important instrument of personality study. With this psychological model it is possible to recognize and classify some basic factors of one's own character or the character of another person, and thus to understand oneself and one's fellow human beings much better. There are nowadays occasional attempts to adapt temperament theory for modern times. The form presented here is based on the ancient and philosophical sources.

The basic nature of a melancholic person is profound and melancholic or gloomy. The constructive side of the temperament is his deep dedication. Therefore, he or she gets to the bottom of things and tries to grasp them in all their depth. The melancholic is characterized by mental clarity, reliability and loyalty. The destructive side of the melancholic can manifest in complaining and self-pity. He is therefore sometimes depressive, pessimistic and extremely critical - also self-critical. He is motivated by compassion and idealism. This may also be the reason why melancholic people often pursue an ideal. In the negative case, they can be fanatic.
