Notes on the jockey/trainer pairings and exact margins above: I used the official result pages (Racing Post, RacingTV, AtTheRaces/Timeform) which list the precise finishing order, margins, jockeys and trainers. Where jockey names appear twice on reports for the same meeting (racecards sometimes reflect multiple rides) I prioritized the Racing Post / RacingTV published card.

Race narrative / how it was won
Kapitein Kool (a 33/1 shot) was held up towards the rear, made steady headway approaching the final two hurdles, got upsides at the last, led on the run-in and kept on to deny Calvino by a neck — described across race reports as a surprise but decisive late surge under James Best for J W Mullins. Le Soleil Reve stayed on for third. RacingTV’s sectional data shows Kapitein Kool’s late finishing speed was strong for the race.

Controversy / stewards’ action
The meeting did attract a stewards’ enquiry related to this race: the Newton Abbot stewards reported an enquiry about why a bypass at the final flight of hurdles was not implemented after a loose horse was caught/held on the landing side on the stands’ rail. The stewards’ report for the meeting references this (and other enquiries held that day). That enquiry was recorded in the official stewards’ notices; did not find any published change to the finishing order for the 14:15 (the official placings were published and remain as above).
