1998-2002 Lincoln Continental AX4N transmission problem P1744 torque converter repair issue

1998-2002 Lincoln Continental p1744 transmission problem code issue that was repaired by torque converter replacement. Valve body/pump replacement. Pump shaft replacement. Torque converter solenoid replacement. Directions:

Removal of valve body without removing transmission:
0. Turn off suspension switch/disconnect negative battery/jack up vehicle/support with jack stand
1. Remove battery and battery tray
2. Remove engine air cleaner inlet tube
3. Disconnect digital transmission sensor electrical connector
4. Disconnect transmission vehicle harness connector
5. Remove & discard axle nut from driver wheel
6. Disconnect air suspension height sensor (if applicable) lower clip and position out the way
7. Remove outer tie rod end nut from driver side and separate tie rod from knuckle
8. Remove ball joint nut from driver side and separate ball joint from knuckle
9. Use pray bar between frame and strut rod to separate ball joint from control arm
10. Separate axle from knuckle (use rental tool)
11. Carefully pray between tranny and axle with flat head screw driver or pry bar to push out driver axle
12.Loosen front driver side frame mount just enough to lower frame to remove valve body
13. Use wood between jack and tranny pan to safely jack up tranny
14. Remove tranny bracket and mount
15. Position a drain pan near side cover.
16. Remove side cover bolts from bottom. Allow fluid to drain in pan. Remove top bolts
17. Remove side cover and (reusable) gasket. Side cover should be easily removable through huge gap shown in video.
18. Lift the locking tabs and disconnect electrical connectors of all solenoids.
19. Remove all the valve body bolts that are shown in video
20. Disconnect manual linkage
21. Remove valve body by carefully sliding it off pump shaft
22. Remove pump shaft (if necessary)

If you have removed the above and wish to remove the entire transmission from the bottom:
23. Remove both tranny cooler line retaining clips
24. Depress tab on each plastic insert retainer and remove each cooler line from fitting
25. Install an engine support tool
26. Remove cat exhaust (dual converter y pipe)
27. Repeat 5,6,7,8,9,10,11 for passenger side
28. Separate rack and pinion from steering by removing bolt
29. Disconnect power steering pressure hose at intermediate connection and drain fluid in a pan
30. Disconnect power steering return hose from cooler and drain fluid in a pan
31. Disconnect turbine shaft speed sensor electrical connection
32. Remove starter motor.
33. Remove torque convertor shield (transmission housing cover)
34. Manually turn crankshaft to remove each torque convertor nut
NOTE: Before step 35, you can remove spark plugs to make crankshaft easier to turn. I didnt.
35. Remove 4 bottom transmission retaining bolts
36. Position jack or transmission jack on transmission pan
37. Remove remaining 4 transmission retaining bolts at top
38. Lower transmission from engine
39. Remove transmission through driver side wheel well
If I missed any steps, let me know. I did this job over two years ago. I don't remember each exact step I used.
Transmission removed 9/4/16. As of Today (3/28/25), transmission is as good as new

Torque Converter replaced with Dacco FL68E2LS (rockauto.com) $101.79 (without core)
Pump shaft replaced with Sonnax 9685502K (rockauto.com) $32.79
Torque Converter solenoid replaced with Dacco 96954 (rockauto.com) $28.79
Replaced Tranny filter with Motorcraft FT128 (rockauto.com) $16.65
Used SuperTech Synthetic Blend Mercon V fluid (from walmart) about $3 per quart.
MasterPro Hi-Temp Disc Brake Wheel Bearing Grease to lubricate Torque Converter pilot hub (forgot where I purchased it)
Used "low mileage" AX4N Lincoln Continental Valve body off eBay $70.00
Topped off power steering with Motorcraft Mercon V (bottle already in trunk)
Purchased Timken 4189H Torque Converter Seal $8.20 and Sonnax 9685501K pump needle bearing $7.89. from rockauto.com. DID NOT NEED ANY OF THE AFOREMENTIONED. DID NOT USE OR INSTALL THOSE PARTS.
