Phuket Thailand owes a lot to its its cultural heritage to its Thai-Chinese Baba Peranakan (predominantly Hokkien) ancestry way of life, the minor culture once present in the Malay Peninsula. Today, it’s estimated that at least 70% of Phuket’s population has Peranakan ancestral roots.
Several Baba traditions in Phuket have died. Its significance and identity has been dwindled through time. But with the effort of some Phuketians and local tourism units, some of the traditions such as food, costumes, and ceremonies have been brought back to life.
