"A walk through Havana’s Paseo del Prado — where history meets the rhythm of everyday Cuban life."
Take a walk with me down the Paseo del Prado, Havana’s most elegant boulevard, stretching from the steps of the Capitolio all the way to the Malecón. This iconic promenade has been the heart of Havana life for centuries, blending history, art, and the rhythm of daily Cuban culture.
The Paseo del Prado was originally laid out in the late 18th century, when Havana began expanding beyond its colonial walls. In the 1920s, it was redesigned by the famous French landscape architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, who gave it the look we see today — with wide marble sidewalks, bronze lions, stone benches, and a double row of trees providing shade for passersby. For decades, it was where Havana’s elite paraded in carriages, and later, where families gathered for evening strolls.
Along this walk, we’ll pass some of Havana’s most striking landmarks:
El Capitolio, once the seat of government and now home to Cuba’s National Assembly.
The Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, a jewel of neobaroque architecture and home to the Cuban National Ballet.
Elegant mansions, art deco buildings, and vibrant side streets that show Havana’s layered history.
But the Prado isn’t just about the past. Today, it’s alive with street artists, painters, musicians, and children playing soccer under the shade of the trees. On weekends, local artisans line the promenade with their crafts, turning the boulevard into a colorful open-air market.
Finally, the walk opens up to the sea at the Malecón, Havana’s famous waterfront, where locals gather at sunset to enjoy the breeze and the endless horizon.
This is more than a street — the Paseo del Prado is a living museum of Havana’s soul, where history and daily life flow side by side.
