When the Storms' leader, Monsoon, died during the drought last year (2022), we mourned one of the most fearless and oldest female matriarchs in Samburu National Reserve. She was a grand dame who had lived an extraordinary life. Despite being shot five times by poachers at the height of the poaching crisis in 2009 - 2012, Monsoon mothered seven calves and took amazing care of her family.
We estimated that she was in her sixties when she died, but it wasn’t until we salvaged her jawbone a year later and examined her teeth that we realised just how old Monsoon truly was. Elephants only have six sets of molars in their lifetime. Once the last set of teeth wear down, they lose the ability to chew and often die of starvation.
To learn about the significance of Monsoon's teeth, watch this short film by Jane Wynyard/Save the Elephants (Additional footage by Robbie Labanowski, Giacomo D’Ammando/Save the Elephants and Tanya Onserio/Save the Elephants).
