98 Cheap Thrills
1
We’re getting near the end of the book,
So I should tell one on myself,
As this particular cheap thrill,
Didn’t happen to anyone else.
2
I was teaching high school in Indiana,
And thinking of joining the service.
I had delusions of me and Rambo,
Yet I was still a little nervous.
3
I was at the door of a DC-3,
Real World War Two era stuff,
A skydiving club had come to town,
And naturally I joined up.
4
How hard could skydiving be,
After all I was to join Reagan’s forces.
In a year or two I’d have the USSR,
Counting up their loses.
5
Pull the practice ripcord on the side.
Avoid the power lines and lake.
Your main chute will open by static line,
And don’t pull your reserve chute by mistake.
6
The next thing I knew I was falling,
With two parachutes in the wind.
“Young man, you pulled your reserve,”
“And now you must pull it in.”
7
I landed with a parachute stuffed between my knees,
The ground my only friend.
I tiptoed back to my civilian car,
And never went skydiving ever again.
