This bow speed exercise, the "fast-slow" exercise, is adapted from Simon Fischer's Basics for the violin to increase control of tone; some of the tone exercises are challenging for cello because of our thicker strings, which respond less quickly, but they are still extremely effective and should be explored in every practice session. I recommend practicing one exercise focused on tone a day as a part of your practice routine; really listen, focus, and try to make it sound as good as you can. The exercises mostly come from Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay, major figures in violin pedagogy.
