We got our foot in the door of Romans 7! Paul begins with an analogy about marriage law and when a wife can lawfully marry another man. This analogy, like all other analogies, stands on three legs and could be pushed over—however, the point is that believers are now married to Christ and not to the Law (7:1–4). This affirmation prepares for 7:5 (once being enslaved to the law and sinning) and 7:6 (but now walking in the newness of the Spirit)—two verses that outline the next two argument units. Next time, we will pick up at 7:5.
