E ZEE POSSEE Love On Love (Phil Kelsey Remix) DR MOUTHQUAKE

In 1992, Boy George and his label More Protein were on the eve of being let go by their distribution label, Virgin Records and were desperate for a hit single to buoy themselves back into the fickle good graces of the money men. You see, although enjoying several hit singles on the dance charts and at the best nightclubs, the only artist to have a legitimate top 10 single was the labels' very first release- some 4 or 5 years before (or, roughly 22 singles ago). They were willing to allow George his "vanity project" (their words, not mine) only a little while longer. E-zee Possee put the finishing touches on their album, "The Bone Dance", full of cool dance grooves and no fewer than 11 lead vocalists. A new remix of "Love On Love" was chosen to be the single to herald the birth of "The Bone Dance".
Knowing they needed as much exposure as possible, the track was sent to DMC- a DJ remix service with the enviable position in the industry of knowing what will be the next big thing, and tinkering with the tracks to make it their own. Despite having some of the biggest names in the industry at their beck and call, sometimes it just wasn't meant to be. That name, in this case, was Phil Kelsey- who had worked with Erasure (and would continue to do so for years to come), and his version of this song has quickly become my favorite. It's not an easy version to track down. It never appeared on any of the official releases from More Protein, just a plain 12" record buried alongside a selection of some long-forgotten early 90s dance artists who barely released a dozen records between them.
"Love On Love" failed to chart in 1992, and the album was released despite being a loss for More Protein, and George & his possee packed it up and went fully independent for the second half of the decade. A 1996 remix was released on 12" only, but the song did not chart until a 1998 cover version by Candi Station did a cover version of it, which charted at #27.
