Violent protests erupted in Tbilisi after Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party claimed a sweeping 71 percent victory in local elections. Supporters of the opposition clashed with police, setting up burning barricades near the parliament and presidential palace. Mayor Kakha Kaladze accused “European aggressors and bureaucrats” of backing unrest, while Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze alleged the EU envoy Pavel Gerchinsky supported an attempt to overthrow Georgia’s constitutional order. Police deployed water cannons to disperse protesters, with at least 20 officers injured, according to the Health Ministry.
