Portugal’s scientific community reacted with shock and grief on December 19 following the killing of Portuguese professor Nuno Loureiro in the United States. Loureiro, an MIT professor, was found shot dead in his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, after last weekend’s mass shooting at Brown University that killed two students and injured nine others.
U.S. authorities say the suspect, Portuguese national Claudio Neves Valente, 48, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in New Hampshire. Investigators are certain Valente also killed Loureiro, though the motive remains unclear. Both men previously worked or studied at Lisbon’s Instituto Superior Técnico, where colleagues remembered Loureiro as rigorous, generous, and deeply respected.
Officials say evidence including video footage, digital records, and firearms recovered near Valente’s body link him to the crimes, bringing a tragic end to a case that spanned multiple states and shook academic communities on both sides of the Atlantic.
