Puuwai's Outrigger Canoe Regatta Race, Wailua River - KVIC-TV, myKauai.com [Event] [Culture]

Outrigger Regatta Races are a staple of Kauai's culture. Nearly every Saturday from April to August, canoe clubs congregate at Kauai's bays and in the Wailua River.

"It all starts from the family. Everyone's family here. Brothers, sisters, grandma, grandpa, aunties, uncles. Everybody gets together to paddle."

"I'm haole, but I feel the ancestors through the old boats, the Koa boats. I just can't help but to think about all the competitions that went hundreds of years before me, and how I'm in one of those seats. It's just really exciting that way."

Island Clubs include Hanalei Canoe Club, Kaiola Canoe Club, Kawaikini Canoe Club, Kilohana Canoe Club, Koloa Outrigger Canoe Club, Kukui'ula Outrigger Club, Namolokama O'Hanalei Canoe Club, and Puuwai Canoe Club.
