Have you ever come across one of those stories of park rangers or fire lookouts who experienced something unexplainable in the woods? They’ll be out there, minding their business, and then there are strange sounds from beyond the light of their cabin or camp. A twig will snap, a strange cry may come from the woods, and the skin prickles on the spine as the narrator realizes suddenly that the only thing more unsettling than being alone in the forest, is not being alone in the forest. The stories frequently differ in their details, but the one throughline is that a wilderness professional ends up being chased by someone or something until finally, at long last, the protagonist reaches safety. These stories are, almost exclusively, fictional - but there’s a reason I use the word “almost.” Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...
