December Seed Sowing – What I’m Growing & Why

Even in winter, some flowers benefit from cold conditions:

🌸 Cornflowers
Cornflowers are hardy annuals and actually prefer a period of cold. Sowing them now helps create strong, sturdy plants that flower earlier and more reliably in late spring and early summer.

🌸 Snapdragons (Antirrhinums)
Snapdragons can be slow starters, so winter sowing gives them a head start. They tolerate cool conditions well when protected and reward you with longer flowering later in the year.

🌸 Sweet Peas
Sweet peas are ideal for winter sowing. The cold helps them develop deep roots rather than lots of weak top growth. Sown now and kept frost-free, they’ll produce stronger plants and earlier flowers in spring.

All are best kept in an unheated greenhouse, cold frame, or sheltered spot outdoors, protected from hard frost.
