Tonight on News Night with Kenneth Gyasi and Pearl Ofori on Joy 99.7 FM:
The much-anticipated ratification of Ghana’s lithium mining deal faces yet another delay as the government moves to amend the royalties law to secure a stronger stake for the state. Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah reveals that the government has not ruled out a State-led ownership and mining model as part of efforts to maximise Ghana’s benefit from the resource.
Also tonight, Ghana Water Limited has accepted the Public Utility Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) nearly 16% tariff increment, down significantly from its earlier 281% request. The company says the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies and the rising cost of treatment forced the demand, but now promises to make do with what they have.
But the big question remains: How long can GWCL cope?
The Minority in Parliament insists that both ECG and GWCL must drastically improve service delivery to justify any new rates.
Meanwhile, the opposition NPP says Ghana’s democracy is at risk, accusing the governing NDC of orchestrated attempts to influence the courts and suppress free speech.
Yet the Majority Chief Whip and MP for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, hints that the NDC is poised for legal victories as early as next week in three additional 2024 election-related court challenges.
We bring you the details, analysis, and more developing stories tonight on News Night.
Stay tuned.
