When measuring your lawn for new grass, start by dividing the area into a number of squares, rectangles and triangles.
It may be a good idea to make a rough drawing of your lawn, showing any flower beds, walk ways or other areas that wont have grass.
This leaves the areas you need to measure.
When dividing the lawn into these individual plots, you might find it helpful to mark the plots with string or by laying out a water hose.
Using a wheeled measuring device or measuring tape, simply measure the length and width of each square and rectangle. Then multiply those two numbers to give you the square feet of that area.
When measuring a triangle, measure the length of one side by the width, and then divide by 2. This will give you the square footage of that area.
Now add all of the square feet together, and add a little additional for good measure (this amount depends on the overall size of your lawn, but 3 to 5% is a good number to use), and you have the total square feet of grass to order.
It's that simple.
Depending on the turf you choose, which will be covered in our next chapter, you can figure on 1 pallet to cover approximately 450 square feet.
So divide your total square feet by 450 and you'll have a good idea of the number of pallets needed to cover your lawn.
