安土城は、滋賀県近江八幡市にある城。
城址は国の特別史跡で、琵琶湖国定公園第1種特別地域になっている
安土城は織田信長によって安土山に建造され、大型の天主を初めて持つなど威容を誇った。
天主は地下1階地上6階建てで、高さ約32メートル。
それまでの城にはない絢爛豪華な城だった。
しかし、天正10年（1582年）、本能寺の変の後まもなく天主は焼失した。
但し、焼失したのは主に天主と本丸で、清洲会議後に織田秀信が二の丸に入城したことからも、城としての機能は有していたが、天正13年（1985年）に廃城となる。
現在は石垣などの遺構を残すのみだが、当時、城内を観覧した宣教師ルイス・フロイスなどが残した記録により、安土城の姿を伺い知ることができる。
安土城は総石垣で普請された城郭で、初めて石垣上に天守が築かれた城でもある。
ここで培われた築城技術が、以後全国で築城された近世城郭の模範となった。
安土城の普請を手がけた石工の「穴太衆」は、全国の石垣普請に携わり、石垣による築城は瞬く間に全国に広がった。
城郭の遺構は安土山全体に分布しており、当時の建築物では仁王門と三重塔が残っている。
昭和27年（1952年）特別史跡に指定。
平成18年（2006年）、日本100名城（51番）に選定された。

Azuchi Castle is located in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture.
The castle ruins are a national special historic site and Lake Biwa National Park Type 1 Special Area.
Azuchi Castle was built by Oda Nobunaga on Mt. Azuchi, and boasted a magnificent appearance, including the first large castle tower.
The main keep was six stories above ground and one below, and was approximately 32 meters high.
It was the most luxurious castle ever built.
However, in 1582, shortly after the Honnoji Incident, the castle was destroyed by fire.
However, the main part of the castle was destroyed by fire, and the castle was still functional as Oda Hidenobu entered Ninomaru after the Kiyosu Conference, but the castle was abandoned in 1985.
Today, only stonewalls and other remains remain, but records left by Luis Frois, a missionary who visited the castle at that time, provide a glimpse of what Azuchi Castle was like.
Azuchi Castle was built entirely of stone walls and was the first castle with a keep built on a stone wall.
The castle construction techniques developed at Azuchi Castle became a model for other castles built in the early modern period throughout Japan.
"Anoshu” stone masons who worked on the construction of Azuchi Castle were involved in the construction of stone walls throughout the country, and the use of stone walls for castle construction spread quickly throughout the country.
Castle remains are distributed throughout Mt. Azuchi, and the Niomon Gate and three-story pagoda are among the buildings that remain from that time.
In 1952, it was designated as a Special Historic Site.
In 2006, it was selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan (No. 51).
