Genetically labeled commissural neurons revealing their axons as they cross the midline of the chick embryo central nervous system.
This live imaging video shows the highly organized growth of neuronal projections, known as axons, during nervous system development. Commissural neurons play a crucial role in connecting the left and right sides of the nervous system by extending axons across the midline and reorienting their growth along the longitudinal axis.
This video of mine won 4th place in the 2021 Nikon Small World in Motion Competition.
The specimen was imaged using a spinning-disk confocal microscope with a 40× objective.
