My mother clapped. My father raised his beer. My sister Sarah actually stood up to hug him. The whole family erupted in cheers while I sat there, frozen, with my phone vibrating in my palm.

I answered the call.
"Ms. Rivera?" A woman's voice, professional, careful. "This is Catherine Walsh, senior title underwriter at Pacific Crest Title Company. I'm calling regarding the property sale scheduled to close on the seventeenth. Do you have a moment?"
I stood up from the picnic table. Walked toward the fence line where the noise dimmed. "Yes. I have a moment."
