According to history, the southern, eastern, and western gopurams (temple towers) were built by Sri Krishnadevaraya. The northern gopuram was built on the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the great Maratha king, who was a devoted follower of Mallikarjuna Swamy and Bhramarambika Devi.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, many Chenchu tribals participated in the temple rituals and prayers. A local legend says that long ago, when Mallikarjuna Swamy was hunting in the forest, a Chenchu girl fell in love with him. Later, they got married in front of the locals. Since then, the people of the region consider Mallikarjuna Swamy as their son-in-law, and they lovingly call him Chenchu Mallanna or Chenchu Mallayya.
