In April 1986, 13-year-old Cindy Zarzycki left her home in Eastpointe, Michigan, to walk to a nearby store. It was a short trip—five minutes, maybe ten. The kind of errand any parent would think was safe. But Cindy never came home.

For 22 years, her family lived in a nightmare of not knowing. Was she alive? Was she suffering somewhere? Or had the worst already happened? Her bedroom stayed exactly as she'd left it. Her mother baked a birthday cake every year, singing through tears to a daughter who wasn't there. Her father drove the same streets over and over, searching, hoping, praying for a miracle that never came.

Police had a suspect from the very beginning—Arthur Ream, a former security guard with a disturbing history and an obsession with young girls. Detectives were convinced he was responsible. They questioned him. They followed him. They watched him take late-night drives to a remote wooded area, as if he were checking on something. But without a body, without concrete evidence, they couldn't charge him.
