With sincere thanks to "bubba" for his guide on the MPVClub.com website (here: http://mpvclub.com/diy.php?id=118) this is a transmission fluid exchange performed on a 2nd generation Mazda MPV by disconnecting the transmission fluid cooler line and directing it into a jug. If your fluid is brown or your shifting is a little rough, you can perform this fluid exchange and smooth things out and extend the life of your transmission.
Update at 185,000 miles (50,000 miles since I did this fluid exchange): the hard shift from 2nd to 3rd has gotten a bit worse so I decided to do this process again. This time, I drained, filled, drained, and filled once more, plus I used a bottle of Lucas transmission fix oil. The old fluid was much less dirty than the first time I did this process, and it returned to a healthy red/pink after only swapping out 7 quarts or so. Then I went and drove about 15 minutes, and it was markedly improved in shifting smoothness, though still a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd.
Thanks for watching.
