The check engine light is on in my 2016 BMW i3 with Range Extender — so I grabbed a cheap, low-budget OBD2 scanner to see if it could read the fault codes and reset the warning.
Spoiler: it couldn’t.
In this video, I show exactly what a generic OBD2 scanner can and can’t do on modern BMWs. While it successfully reads the VIN number, it fails to pull any engine fault codes or clear the check engine light — proving why many BMWs require a BMW-specific diagnostic tool for full system access.
If you’re driving a BMW, MINI, or modern European car, this is a real-world demonstration of the limits of universal OBD2 scanners, why manufacturer-specific software matters, and how relying on the wrong tool can lead to false confidence — or expensive guesswork.
Perfect for DIY mechanics, EV and hybrid owners, and anyone curious about vehicle diagnostics, BMW fault codes, and check engine light troubleshooting.
