Worked solution for Question 2, Chapter 6 (available as free download at https://www.particles.org.uk/particle...) in Fundamentals of Particle Technology. This covers continuous thickener design using flux theory, which is covered in Chapter 6 of the book. In Question 1 we discovered that a batch tank to settle solids at 3% v/v, at a rate of 1000 cubic metres per day, was not feasible for our requirements. The tank was far too wide and shallow to be effective. The alternative is to design a continuous device, a continuous thickener. In theory, a single batch sedimentation, typically carried out in a measuring cylinder, can be used to deduce all the data we need. We can obtain a range of settling velocities for different concentrations by drawing tangents to the single settling curve. This is illustrated here. The sound on this video has a bit of echo at the start, but this quickly stops - please do stick with the video.
