Covering Your Model With Tissue

I think most beginning modelers are missing out on the satisfaction of building a balsa model. Either as a static display model or as a functional flying aircraft you will hours of fun building the kits with your family or as your own personal hobby time. It’s cheap and simple so there is no excuse. It can be a little intimidating for the first time modeler, but just follow the instructions and I believe you will surprise yourself.
Applying tissue to a balsa model. I used a Gallows Javelin to apply the tissue to. You can use 3 different methods that do not have smelly fumes and are safe to use in a closed area.
1. Elmer’s Glue – A good option, it’s clean and does not produce harmful odors.
2. A glue stick – This is the quickest way to cover since it dries fast and still gives you time to adjust the tissue.
3. Eze Dope – This is just like the Elmer’s glue but thinner. It’s still a good option.
Make sure that you have the following.
• Sharp pair of scissors.
• A sharp modeling knife.
• There are 3 different methods to apply the tissue to the balsa model. I prefer the Elmer’s glue stick ( I am a pretty impatient modeler).
• An atomizer sprayer with a mixture of 50% water 50% alcohol.
• Krylon clear matte finish spray.
Most models that I have covered have supplied plenty of tissue to cover your model so don’t worry about running out. If by chance you found a way to run out of tissue. You can find plenty at your local hobby store or you can order it online. Apply the tissue in the sequence suggested by the manufacture s plans using one of the 3 types of glues. make sure that you cut the tissue as close to the application area as possible (It will make a neater application). after you have finished applying the tissue then lightly spray the tissue with the water/alcohol mixture and let it dry. The tissue will tighten around the balsa frame. before you apply any paint apply the clear Krylon. It will sag a little but then it will tighten back up again.
