TL;DR: The 3 types of RNA polymerases (enzymes that polymerize nucleotides to make ribonucleic acid) are RNA Polymerase I, II, and III. RNA Pol I makes rRNA in the nucleolus; RNA Pol II makes mRNA, miRNA, and snRNA; and RNA Pol III makes tRNA and 5S rRNA.
Today’s MedCat video covers the three different types of RNA polymerases and how we can memorize them for test day. Note that RNA Polymerase II may be the most relevant one for test day, as it synthesizes the very important molecule mRNA, the intermediate between DNA and protein. That is not to say, however, that the others are not important! Deficiency in any one of these enzymes would have a significant impact on the cell.
