What are Tier 2 Interventions?
First, let’s talk about what Tier 2 interventions are. Tier 2 is all about providing additional support to students who aren’t responding to Tier 1 interventions alone. These interventions are targeted, small-group strategies aimed at helping students get back on track.
Tier 2 typically supports about 10-15% of students (depending of the schools and the needs)—those who are falling slightly behind but aren’t in need of more intensive, individualized help yet. These students might be struggling with specific academic concepts or behavioral expectations, and they need targeted, supplementary instruction or intervention to bridge those gaps.
2: Who Benefits from Tier 2 Interventions?
Tier 2 interventions are designed for students who may be slipping behind their peers but don’t yet require intensive, individualized support. These students need more focused instruction or behavioral support to help them succeed in the general education setting._
In most schools, about 10-15% of students benefit from Tier 2 interventions. These students might be just below grade level in reading or math, or they may have difficulty consistently following classroom routines and expectations._
Examples of Tier 2 Interventions in the Classroom
Now that we understand what Tier 2 is and who it supports, let’s take a look at some examples of Tier 2 interventions that you can use in your classroom._
Academic Examples:
1. Small-Group Instruction:
One of the most common Tier 2 strategies is small-group instruction. This allows you to provide more focused support to students who need it without taking away from whole-class learning. You can group students based on their specific needs and work on targeted skills._
Example: Pulling a small group aside during reading time to focus on phonics, fluency, or comprehension strategies.
Example:Using math intervention time to reteach a specific concept like fractions or multiplication, targeting students who need extra practice.
2. Targeted Tutoring or Intervention Blocks:
Tier 2 can also involve dedicated time for targeted tutoring or intervention, where students receive focused, additional instruction on areas of difficulty._
Example:A 20-minute daily reading intervention block where students practice fluency using leveled readers.
Example: Math intervention groups working on number sense or problem-solving strategies outside of regular class time.
3. Progress Monitoring:
In Tier 2, progress monitoring is critical. You’ll need to assess student performance regularly to make sure the intervention is working. This can include weekly or biweekly assessments to measure growth._
Example: Using quick reading fluency assessments like DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) to track reading progress.
Example: Monitoring math progress with short quizzes or online programs that offer data on individual performance.
Behavioral Examples:
1. Social Skills Groups:
Some students may need additional help developing social or emotional skills. Tier 2 interventions can include small social skills groups where students work on things like making friends, resolving conflicts, or managing emotions._
Example: A weekly lunch group where students practice communication skills and discuss how to manage their emotions when conflicts arise.
Monitoring and Adjusting Tier 2 Interventions
Like we mentioned earlier, monitoring progress is a crucial part of Tier 2 interventions. If students are making progress, they may eventually return to just Tier 1. But if they’re still struggling, we may need to move them to Tier 3 for more intensive help._
It’s important to continually assess student progress and make adjustments to interventions as needed. For example, if a small-group reading intervention isn’t helping a student improve their fluency, you might need to try a different strategy or a different set of reading materials._
Closing
To sum it up, Tier 2 interventions provide targeted support for students who need more than Tier 1 can offer. Whether it’s through small-group instruction, focused tutoring, or behavioral support, the goal of Tier 2 is to help students get back on track without requiring intensive, individualized interventions.
