My talk on "Raga, tala and chhanda in Jayadeva : an analysis of Gitagovinda rendition in traditional Odissi music", especially the Jagannatha Temple tradition. Here I analyse the Gitagovinda renditions of the Utkalīya / Jayadevī paramparā in light of the various pothis (manuscripts), ṭikās (commentaries), sangīta-sāstras (musical treatises) and anukṛutis (imitatons) of the text prevalent in Odisha. Elaborate discussion on treatment of the lyric in various rāgas, tālas and especially chaturasra and non-chaturasra chhanda-tāla relationship, and how Kavirāja Jayadeva employs the 14-mātrā Jatitāla to set the Sanskrit lyric to music in a novel manner, setting an ideal that would inspire Indian classical music for centuries to come.
