How I Work From Anywhere Without Telling My Job

WORK FROM ANYWHERE — GL-A1300 ROUTER SETUP (STEP-BY-STEP)

This setup uses two GL.iNet Slate Plus (GL-A1300) routers:

Home Router = Server (stays on at home 24/7)

Travel Router = Client (goes with you)

Once paired, your travel internet routes through your home — so websites think you’re still there.

🏠 STEP 1 — SET UP THE HOME ROUTER (SERVER)

Do this at home. Do NOT unplug once working.

Plug an Ethernet cable from your modem/home router into the blue WAN port on the GL-A1300.

Power it on.

Connect your laptop to the router’s Wi-Fi (SSID starts with GL-).

Open a browser → go to http://192.168.8.1

Create your admin password if prompted.

Confirm Internet

Go to Internet

Status must say Connected with an IP address
👉 If not, click Modify → DHCP

🌐 STEP 2 — ENABLE DYNAMIC DNS (DDNS)

Go to Applications → Dynamic DNS

Toggle Enable

Agree to terms

Write down the hostname (example: aa06c02.glddns.com)

⚠️ Important:

DDNS may say “test failed” and still work

Wait 2–5 minutes after enabling before continuing

🔑 STEP 3 — ENABLE WIREGUARD SERVER (HOME ROUTER)

Go to VPN → WireGuard Server

Click Start

Leave defaults:

IPv4: 10.0.0.1/24

Port: 51822 (or any open port)

Click Apply

Create Travel Profile

Open Profiles tab

Click Add

Name it: TravelRouter

Toggle Use DDNS Domain → ON

Confirm endpoint shows:

aa06c02.glddns.com:51822


Click Download Configuration File

Save this .conf file

🚨 Do NOT turn off the home router after this

✈️ STEP 4 — SET UP THE TRAVEL ROUTER (CLIENT)

This router must be on a DIFFERENT network.

Power on the travel router

Connect it to:

Phone hotspot OR

Hotel / café Wi-Fi
❌ Never your home Wi-Fi

Connect your laptop to the travel router’s Wi-Fi

Go to http://192.168.10.1

Confirm Internet

Go to Internet → Repeater

Status must show Connected with IP, gateway, DNS

🔄 STEP 5 — IMPORT VPN CONFIG (TRAVEL ROUTER)

Go to VPN → WireGuard Client

Click + New Group

Name it: HomeServer

Click Add Configuration → Import File

Upload the .conf file from Step 3

Click Save

Toggle Connect

⏳ Wait 10–20 seconds

✅ Green = Connected
🟡 Yellow = Trying (usually DNS or network issue)

✅ STEP 6 — VERIFY

Go to whatismyipaddress.com

It should show your home location, not your travel location

VPN Dashboard should show bytes sent/received

⚠️ GOTCHAS (READ THIS IF SOMETHING FAILS)

❌ Client & server on same Wi-Fi = won’t connect

❌ Unplugging home router can break DDNS

🟡 Yellow light usually means:

DDNS hasn’t refreshed yet

Travel router isn’t actually online

DDNS can show NXDOMAIN temporarily — wait a few minutes

You do not need to touch your ISP once this works

Once green, the travel router can reconnect automatically overseas

🔁 POWER-UP ORDER (IF IT EVER BREAKS)

Modem / Home internet router → ON

GL-A1300 Home Router → ON (wait until internet + VPN server active)

GL-A1300 Travel Router → ON (connect to hotspot)

Toggle WireGuard Client → Connect

🧠 FINAL TIP

Once your home router is stable, you do nothing while traveling.
Just power the travel router, connect to Wi-Fi, and click Connect.
