Using Gen AI to support students to engage with academic writing and critical thinking.
Anne-Marie Langford, Learning Development Tutor.
University of Northampton
The talk focuses on how Anne-Marie Langford uses Generative AI to create examples of writing for students to analyse using a range of academic writing tools. Generative AI is used to create examples which have specific errors in them for students to analyse, modelling the process of academic writing and proofreading through scaffolding. This enables students to build academic confidence and critical use of AI as a learning tool in an active process rather than passive consumption of AI outputs. Students examine the text for accuracy and coherence which fosters critical thinking. This approach also emphasises ethical AI use, encouraging a critical and informed practice. Anne-Marie’s work demonstrates how AI can be a valuable educational tool, promoting skill development and ethical awareness among students.

This article is very useful in terms of setting out clearly some of the issues around GenAI and truth vs its other obligations to its makers and consumers: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/do...
I like this framework for AI literacy because it doesn’t just include the how and evaluate aspect but also an understanding of what the AI really is and does behind the interface, but also the ethical concerns. For my students, talking about the impact AI is having on the environment is very powerful in making them rethink how/when they use it. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science...
