January 23, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of the volcanic eruption at Vestmannæyjar, Iceland that occurred without warning. Later named the Eldfell volcano, this was Iceland's largest natural disaster in recent history. The story of the speedy evacuation of the island's inhabitants and the heroic efforts to save the harbor at Vestmannæyjar would be components of a page-turner fiction novel. But these events really happened, and the story of Edfell is captivating. This video will show more about this momentous event in Iceland's recent history.
Susan Huff is the descendant of Westman Islanders and lives in Spanish Fork, Utah. She and her husband, Richard lived and volunteered in Iceland for two and a half years as records preservation missionaries, Susan holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s and doctorate degrees in Educational Leadership.
