This is my very first Hawaiian-themed composition. I've been wanting to write this for years. And I just did. - I am truly in love with Hawaiian culture. I love all the cultures... This song falls into the category of hapa haole songs. That means it's a Hawaiian-style song written by someone who is not of Hawaiian ancestry. It's mainly in English. - Here in Seattle we are blessed to have an annual Live Aloha Festival - a free all-ages festival. I actually saw Willie K. there a few years ago. (R.I.P.) - For this song, I dug into my vintage Aloha shirt collection and selected a Hawaiian-made Pacific Legend shirt. I'm also wearing my sea-grass hat. - I have Dupuytren's Contracture, and was unable to play my fabulous 1950 Dynamic baritone ukulele on this song. So I used a small nylon-stringed classical, to give it more of a Hawaiian sound. My grandparents gave me my first uke when I was 6. My mom was in a uke band in Tennessee in the 1930s. She taught me how to play it. I have a tape of her in her 70s singing songs for me, while playing her own baritone uke. Now, that's a treasure!! - I hope you like this one. It's my 210th original song I've posted here in 2.75 years. - Comments please? - I have songs falling into my head all the time. I've been writing twenty a month. But I've decided to let the "B-List" songs float on by from now on. I'm going to just catch the very best ones. I am sort of tickled by this one.
BTW there is a great Facebook group you can join if you're interested in Aloha shirts, entitled Vintage Aloha / Hawaiian Shirts, I would like to say "Aloha" to the group!
