There’s a different way of living with perfume that emerges when you stop hauling + begin paying closer attention.

Instead of asking what’s next, you start asking what’s already here — what has been chosen carefully, lived with slowly, and allowed to unfold over time. Bottles become less about consumption + more like small, personal archives.

For 2026, I’m doing a no-buy year I’m calling “We’ve Got Perfume at Home.”
For me, this isn’t about restraint so much as reverence — treating my collection as something to be returned to and enjoyed over time, the way we return to favorite books, films, and works of art.

Rather than pursuing the new, I wanted to spend time with what has endured.

Over the next month, I’m pairing my fragrance collection with another lifelong love: FILM.

This series is called Cinema in a Bottle, where I match perfumes to movies that shaped my visual imagination — films released between 1939 and the early 2000s, when atmosphere and design were often as important as plot.

This week’s theme is Stylized Whimsy and Colorful Worlds — films where the setting itself becomes part of the story.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Few films understand the emotional power of color the way The Wizard of Oz does.

It’s built on contrast — black + white to Technicolor, the familiar to the fantastical.

+Marc Jacobs Daisy Wild feels like stepping into Oz itself. Green, bright, open, it mirrors the film’s sense of discovery + optimism, with a side of apple tree.

+Olympic Orchids Olympic Rainforest evokes a living landscape — damp earth, moss + air — Oz not as spectacle, but as (both terrific and terrifying?) environment.

+And Victoria’s Secret Love Spell Body Mist brings unabashed nostalgia. Sweet, pink + joyful, it reminds me that whimsy doesn’t need to be serious to be spot-on.


Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

This is a film where delight + discomfort also exist side by side.

+Lush Avocado Co-Wash Body Spray is creamy, citrusy + edible — playful in a way that feels like lime candy but slightly strange.

+DUA Desired Yacht adds exaggerated richness, glossy + indulgent, like a Technicolor blueberry.

+And Mancera Tonka Cola is fizzy, sticky + nostalgic — sweet with a slightly unsettling edge that suits Wonka’s controlled chaos.


Wes Anderson Films, especially The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Wes Anderson’s worlds feel carefully composed + quietly emotional.

+YSL Rive Gauche suggests old money, perhaps a bit stuck in time but so chic.

+Molinard Habanita adds warmth + history, soft, worn-in + deeply human .

+And Frédéric Malle Iris Poudre sits at the center: soft, refined + a bit cold + reserved, like composure (and an old cosmetics compact) layered over vulnerability.


Amélie (2001)

Amélie is gentle whimsy + discovery — a film of small gestures + interior lives.

+Cacharel LouLou is plush + enveloping, like retreating into (French?) imagination.

+YSL Paris is romantic + nostalgic, expressive + unapologetically sentimental.

+And Serge Lutens Féminité du Bois grounds plum cake with wood and spice, yearning + fear with courage + authenticity.

Pairing perfume with film — especially during a no-buy year — is a reminder that inspiration doesn’t depend on novelty. These films are decades old + they still feel alive.
These perfumes have been with me for years, and they still have something to say.
Cinema in a Bottle is about revisiting and savoring what’s already here — allowing familiar things to be seen anew.
