Due to persistent power outages and frequent national grid collapses, six companies and Nile University of Nigeria have received approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to generate and distribute their own electricity. Collectively, these entities are set to produce up to 30 megawatts, primarily for self-use through captive power generation, bypassing the unreliable national grid.
The move reflects a growing trend: as of September 2024, over 250 manufacturers and institutions had opted out of the grid, generating up to 6,500 MW independently—surpassing the national output of around 5,500 MW. NERC attributes this shift to damaging voltage fluctuations on the grid that disrupt industrial operations.
