From an embassy family’s beloved white “Siberian” pet to ring-winning champions—discover the dramatic, little‑known origin of the Russian White, Russian Black, and Russian Tabby. Born from the elegant Russian Blue, these rare color varieties trace a remarkable journey through the UK and Australia, driven by passionate breeders and careful selection.
In this episode, we follow:
1960s UK: Frances McLeod (Arctic Cattery) begins work with Russian Whites and Blacks.
May 4, 1971, Australia: Dick and Mavis Jones (Myemgay Cattery) launch the pivotal program that truly takes flight.
The foundation story
Mavis Jones recalls acquiring a beautiful, pedigree‑less white “Siberian” from a Thai Embassy official’s family, exchanging a Russian Blue for her and breeding her to a Russian Blue stud. The best white kitten, named White Rose, became the cornerstone of the Russian White line—long, svelte, elegant, and brimming with Russian Blue charm.
Setbacks and perseverance
White Rose was bred back to her sire, Myemgay Yuri. When Rose tragically died of milk fever with kittens only three weeks old, the Joneses hand‑reared the babies and continued refining the line with unwavering dedication. Recognition followed: in July 1975 the Russian Whites were granted eligibility for Championship by the RAS Cat Club of NSW, and by November 1975 the fourth‑generation requirement for full registration was formally met.
