Two women’s college basketball programs just made midseason additions — and neither move is normal.
South Carolina Gamecocks added Alicia Tournebize, a 6-foot-7 forward from France with professional and FIBA experience, while Texas Tech Lady Raiders brought in Stephanie Okechukwu, a 7-foot-1 center from Nigeria and the tallest player in women’s college basketball history.
These aren’t last-minute roster fillers. These are international prospects arriving midseason, and it raises a much bigger question:
Are we about to see more international players join NCAA programs after the season has already started?
In this video, I break down:
Why South Carolina and Texas Tech were able to add players in January
How international basketball development timelines differ from the U.S. system
Why eligibility, visas, and NCAA rules make midseason international signings more realistic
And whether this could become a new roster-building trend in women’s college basketball
With the global game growing fast and coaches expanding their recruiting footprint, this might be just the beginning.
If you want to understand where women’s college basketball is headed next, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.
